Our Accomplished Chefs Make Us One Of the Best San Diego CA Restaurants

Jay started down the road to culinary excellence earlier than most of us had even begun to think of our future careers. At only fifteen years of age, Jay was taken on as an apprentice under the wing of Bernard Herloss, Executive Chef at The San Diego Yacht Club. He excelled in the craft, proving to all around that he had not only found his calling in life but also a font for his limitless creative drive. Not so long after, he earned his degree from the Culinary Institute of America and soon replaced his mentor Bernard as the Yacht Club’s executive chef. 

After expanding his culinary excellence in the kitchens of both the Casa Del Zorra Resort and the Fairbanks Ranch Resort, we were ecstatic to have Jay join us here at Café’ Japengo in 2007 and improve our already excellent cuisine to reach the very top in both taste and quality.

Jay’s passion doesn’t stop at the restaurant. He annually competes in the San Diego Chef Showdown alongside the best local chefs. Each year he participates in charity work with Mama’s Kitchen, an organization that provides food and support to those individuals and their families affected by AIDS and HIV. After sixteen years of culinary excellence, Jay Payne has only shown an increase in creative drive and dedication, which he wholly invests into Café’ Japengo in order to delight the senses of all our revered guests.
